Yulia Tymoshenko´s husband flees Ukraine
“Yulia Tymoshenko´s husband flees Ukraine
The husband of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko is now fleeing the country, and has been granted asylum in the Czech Republic. His wife has just started serving a seven-year prison sentence and, according to Tymoshenko´s party, her family is now under heavy pressure.
Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg confirmed today that the 51-year-old entrepreneur Oleksandr Tymoshenko sought asylum in the country. Hours later, the news came: the application was granted.
According to Yulia Tymoshenko´s party Bjut’s the asylum application is a causal response to the regime’s attempt to further torment the former Prime Minister by exposing her family to pressure.
Yulia Tymoshenko was sentenced last October to seven years in prison for having transgressed her authority when she in 2009 arrived in a compromise with Russia, on one of Ukraine’s very expensive gas contracts with Russia. The day before New Year’s Eve, she was transferred from prison in Kiev to a women’s prison in Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine to serve her sentence. Simultaneously, new cases against Tymoshenko are brought up. Among other things she is accused of stealing money from the state when she in the late 90’s led a large energy company. Also her husband, Oleksandr Tymoshenko, has previously been accused of embezzlement in connection with gas deals in the 90s.
The outside world has condemned the sentencing of Yulia Tymoshenko as political, and many believe the case against her is a way for the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, to get rid of his worst political opponents.
The prison sentence has, inter alia, caused the result that a cooperation between the EU and Ukraine now has been postponed.” Quote; The Echoe
