Yulia Tymoshenko taken to penal colony

Yulia Tymoshenko taken to penal colony
Ukraine’s former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko is on Friday going to be transferred to a ”penal colony” to serve the seven-year prison sentence which she was sentenced to in October.
Tymoshenko has been moved from jail, said an official of the prison system according to Interfax. He did not say to which prison Tymoshenko has been moved, reported Russian news agency RIA Novosti.
According to the newspaper Pravda Ukrainskaja she will be taken to a prison in the Kharkov region. The magazine also claims that she cannot walk and therefore is sitting in a wheelchair.
Many Ukrainian prisons are remnants of the Soviet gulag system, even if the institutions have been modernized.
Tymoshenko was judged to have transgressed her authority when she, as Prime Minister, signed an agreement with Russia on gas supplies.
The verdict led to strained relations with the EU, which considers that the whole matter is political. SR Echo
